The fantasy world of animals carrying more than their homes on their back, and bits of land floating around amongst the clouds is an interesting one. The most referenced example of this theme is probably the movie of Howl’s Moving Castle, but it pops up everywhere - Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc. video clip, the short film “The Mysterious explorations of Jasper Morello” and even the work Melbourne design studio Qube Konstrukt did on the Next Wave Festival in 2005.

The good thing about this theme is that when it’s done, it’s usually done well. Like a giant turtle, lumbering across the land as done by Japanese Studio, Heiwa Alpha.

Sometimes you don’t have to create something new - you just have to do it well, and add your own twist.

Red Interactive Agency, have made a quick loading, visually appealing world with a well-defined and intricate theme. The user creates a character, customises it slightly and with no fuss, is instantly transported into a basic 2d world, where one can chat to others, dance, fight and generally feel like the first time you were online chatting to complete strangers.

It’s deliciously simple, amusing, and visually stunning. And they have their own website in the middle of it all.

It’s the kind of site where every creative wishes they worked on it. The bar is raised - check it out.

Pixelator

Most creative ventures start on a blank canvas, but what can really grab attention is art (or an idea) that attaches itself to to something existing and creates something new. It helps if the “host” is relatively boring, but has assets which make it unique.

The Pixelator project creates a sort of egg carton design out of white foam board. The compartments are blockier though - think pixels. Big ones. These are then placed over video billboards around the New York public transport system, to create wondrous visual patterns.

The obligatory introductory post

Pandemic 60 is all about visual infection. Stuff that you see and inspires you, makes you think differently, makes you act. The stuff that you remember. It’s not necessarily the newest of the new stuff - it’s what you can do with what’s around you. It’s a resource - a visual one, for ideas.

Visual Infection.

Posting content will vary greatly, as ideas come from everywhere. It’s everything from early 1900’s steampunk art that you forgot existed, to creating words out of a micro-controlled wave-machine water pool.

The first stage pf Pandemic 60 is this blog. Once this is at a comfy stage, stage two will let itself known. So in the meantime, follow links, recommend links, and enjoy reading!
