Happy Birthday in Berlin

It’s been a long time since I was back in Berlin, and thanks to Christin, we spent 3 days there. It was odd being back - when you’ve lived somewhere, left, and not come back from years, different things leave imprints on your memory. There’s things I was looking forward to, but what really struck me was how much i’d forgotten. I commented ad nauseum at all the little things that struck me about the city - I think Christin’s the only person who could have handled me. But it was great discovering new things too - new breakfast places, a bar with furniture stuck on the roof… and Platoon, an organisation in which i’m given a 10 minute spiel about what they’re not….

Site Tweaking

It’s funny how you can spend days after day designing all sorts of things for clients, and then when it comes to your own stuff it just either never gets done, is perpetually out of date, and never looks half decent. That’s the way I feel about most of my self promotion on the web. I guess not being content keeps striving me to keep tweaking and changing things though.

So…. enjoy the new larger picture sizes and oversized screen real estate space. There’s been tonnes of things happening since my last post. Not only have I been working on some great projects (keep an eye on iridiumetric.com for those), but I headed up to Manchester, shot the lovely wedding for Alister & Tania, and thus spent time in New Zealand, been back to Australia, and spent a week in Yemen. Yes, lots of photos indeed.

London - putting my legs down

Location: De Beauvoir Town, London, UK
Topic: London

*note* : I’ve combined two posts into one, since they’re mainly just me rambling in a disjointed fashion of all the bits ‘n pieces I was doing amongst searching for both work, and a place to live. It was a bit of a crazy time, as when you don’t have solid things planned, there’s so many things going on, it’s hard to gauge what’s important and what’s not. Inadvertently, i’ve said a lot about a few things, and left many others out. It’s all been tremendous fun, but writing retrospectively, weeks later, means a lot of the little gems are left out. Sorry for that!… now, with enough of a sidetrack - onto the good stuff!

Well didn’t that make all the difference? The weeks in Prague were a godsend - and I could feel it as soon as I landed at Luton airport on a predictably bumpy Wizz Air flight. London seems real. It seems possible. It’s an opportunity to be grabbed, squeezed and taken advantage of. I’m excited as I head on a bus to Hyde Park Corner. I pass Wimbeldon and Baker St and I recognise shops and feel the surge of the city running through me. An elaborately decorated shop passes by - And So To Bed - and i’m reminded of the way creativity is celebrated here. I’m Big Kev. I’m excited.

Billy the Dish

Billy the dish

There’s never a dull moment in London. I was walking through Covent Garden and passed a little chair pushed up against a wall, away from the market stalls. On it was a little dish and a note which read "take me - my name is billy the dish - from bbc’s cash in the attic clue 1".

So I took a photo, and then noticed the market people looking at me keenly. I asked them how long it had been there for. It was their little social experiment - they were bored last week, so decided to put one of their items on a stool, away from the stalls, and see if anyone would take it. It is London after all - if it isn’t bolted down, it won’t last long.

Amazingly, after an entire day no one took it. So the market people decided to put a note on the item - saying "please take me". Again, no one obliged.

So on their third attempt, they put a more detailed note - there is a show on the BBC called Cash in the Attic, but it has nothing to do with this dish. They just wanted to see if anyone would take it. I went for a wander, and 20 minutes later, with the dish still there, grabbed it.

It’s actually really pretty, too.

Corbis Creatives Behind The Lens

I’ve been pretty quiet about this one, mainly cause i’m now in London and it’s all happening back in Australia! I entered two of my photos, Between One and Two and Prescribed Moments into a competition Corbis were holding. Along with 50 other fantastic photos , these two were selected as winners. There was a private showing at the Museum of Modern Art, up in Sydney on the 11th of November, and it’ll be moving down to Melbourne in a few weeks time too.

You can check out the online gallery at creativesbehindthelens.com.au, and i’ll keep things posted when I find out about the Melbourne gallery showing!

And hopefully i’ll get some pictures of the show, too…
