Japanese Storm Water system

Although looking like something out of Half-Life, this apocalyptic underworld is indeed, the real thing. Due to be completed in 2009, the gigantic open spaces connected by 100km of tunneling (in 2005) are, surprisingly, a free tourist attraction (visiting? Edogawa River Office in Kasukabe City). And that’s the cool thing about it – so many of the worlds “big” things are behind government fenced lines, or require special permits to even get near, such as the biggest hole in the world. It’s usually look but don’t touch. Then again, this adds to the mystique - the untouchable, touched, by a select few.

Dr Bob Isherwood

dr bob isherwood

I recently had the pleasure of seeing Dr Bob Isherwood give a freebie talk in Melbourne. No doubt he’s a pretty clever guy - from humble beginnings as a mechanic at age 13, to worldwide Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi for 12 years, he’s the one that “reinvented” the agency to an “ideas” one - and thus influencing many others for years to come. He’s now using his powers for good, figuring out creative ways to melt ice from the mountains and transport fresh water to small Indian villages - or something to that extent. Inspirational stuff.

He gave a talk which was simply phenomenal in my view. How many times have you watched a presentation which was full of charts, numbers & figures, with a babbling speaker, drowning you with information you’ll forget within a few days - or hours? The better presentations are ones which turn tradition on its head. The best ones, however, use traditional methods in new ways. Afterall, everything has a purpose, right?

The topic was “The 3 keys to success” - well trodden, fluffy territory. In Dr Bobs book, they are “Originality”, “Relevance” and “Emotional Connection”. Pretty self explanatory stuff, but how do you make it stick?

Here’s where it got interesting.

Elle Muliarchyk

I’ve been meaning to write about this girl since literally January 08. I came across a DVD which featured some of her work and it sat on my “pile of stuff to attend to” which kept getting bigger than smaller. So i turned the pile upside down.

Elle Muliarchyk has taken a sneaky approach to modeling, and as a result, built up quite a name for herself. She goes into NY boutiques and tries on a nice looking (and often expensive) outfit in the change-room. Naturally, the lighting in these places is pretty swanky, so all that’s needed is a striking pose and you have yourself a pretty impressive scene. You don’t even need a great camera, although i’m sure a timer and a handy ledge or hook will be the more important things to consider.

Urbex - Brunswick Brickworks

Date: 09/11/2008
Location: Brunswick Brickworks
Where: Inner Melbourne

It’s funny when you drive past a place a million times and never see it. We’d known of the place for such a long time and just never got around to visiting - until, coming back from the airport I SMS’d my friend quickly to mention I “just saw the most awesome place” and upon a quick street directory search, realised it was where we were planning on going in a few days time!
